Terms of Service

1. Purpose of the Service

The Lighthouse in the Storm - (hereinafter LiS), website: https://lighthouseinthestorm.org was created with the following objectives and associated data processing approach:

Data collection during generic use of LiS in order to analyse user behaviour and to apply those insights to further improve the website. The privacy policy is available HERE.

When using LiS without registration, visitors needs to accept, that we are logging the generic use of the Site, to enable us analyse the user behaviour and use this for further development. More details are described in the Cookie Policy.

1.5. Registration

During registration the user supplies a username, e-mail address and password, which are stored.

The user must read and accept the service terms and the privacy policy.

After submitting the data, the registration process is triggered and the user receives a confirmation e-mail from LiS. Clicking the URL contained in that e-mail finalises the registration.

1.6. Features Available to Registered and Logged-in Users

Each feature explicitly indicates the purpose of data processing):

1.6.1. Knowledge Item Management (URL, video, audio, document, image, etc.)

1.6.1.1. Upload of knowledge items - Only possible for logged-in users; the uploader is linked to the uploaded item.

1.6.1.2. Addition to personal collection - Items displayed on the LiS front-page are listed in various panels; the 'My Stuff' panel allows the user to associate items with their own account.

1.6.1.3. Rating of knowledge items - LiS records the source of the rating but does not display the their name.

1.6.1.4. Acquisition of experience points ('XP') - after processing a knowledge item, the logged-in user earns XP, stored privately in their profile.

1.6.1.5. Marking items as read - the system records the read status of a knowledge item for each user.

1.6.1.6. Viewing content restricted to registered users - after a succesful login LiS detects the user's status and lists only the items they are authorised to see.

1.6.2. Calendar entry creation

1.6.2.1. Transfer of events to personal calendar - a logged-in user may copy an event of interest into their personal LiS calendar, visible only to them.

1.6.3. Personal profile management

1.6.3.1. Personal-profile notifications

All, below listed notifications are turned off by default.

  1. New knowledge item - if a registered user has set up a notification for a topic, LiS automatically notifies them when a new relevant entry appears.
  2. Personal goals - if a user defines a goal with an associated date, LiS may notify them of forecasted delays or missed deadlines.
  3. Targetet content - content uploaded for the individual user.
  4. System-generated news - emails dispatched according to system settings.
  5. Calendar-event notifications - optional alerts for personal calendar entries.
  6. Highlighted events - optional alerts for events highlighted by LiS admins.

1.6.3.2. Interest-area and goal management - logged-in users may select professional topics of interest (building a competence matrix) and assign goals to those topics. Both the selected topics and goals are visible only to the user and may be used to trigger personalised notifications.

1.6.3.3. Suggested knowledge items ('Add to my collection', 'Recommend something else') are based on the user's previously recorded interests, accumulated experience points, followed tags, and defined goals. Users may accept a recommendation (adding the item to 'My Stuff') or reject it; LiS records the rejection to avoid future suggestions of the same item.

1.6.3.4. Requesting new topics - logged-in users may propose new topics on their own behalf.

1.6.3.5. Voting on existing requests - Users may vote on already submitted requests; votes are recorded anonymously, but the fact that a vote occurred is stored to allow accounting of voting tokens.

Only logged-in users may upload knowledge items, and the uploader is linked to the uploaded content.

Prohibited content includes, but is not limited to: illegal material, misleading information, content that infringes third-party rights, or personal data misuse.

In the case of repeated, deliberate attempts of violations, the LiS admin team will notify the violator in writing, and if another violation occurs, the user's account will be terminated.

5. Service Availability

We work with every possible means to ensure continuous availability of LiS, but we cannot guarantee it. LiS is not an archiving system; each user is responsible for ensuring that the uploaded knowledge elements are securely preserved by other technical solutions under their own control. In the event of planned service downtime or suspension, all users will be notified by email 48 hours in advance.
